Bit of Meraki Seattle, WA

MERAKI means “doing something with soul, creativity, and love.”

Tell us about your company. What inspired you to create it?

We’re a woman owned social enterprise that aims to empower artisans by imbibing their traditional handmade techniques into modern home décor textiles like wall hanging, rugs, poufs, throw pillows etc. We pride ourselves in being conscious about our environment and have all our products made with only natural materials and chemical free dyes.  I have always been passionate about contributing to our communities in India through charitable donations and also via working in a social enterprise in Delhi. I was fascinated by the talent and will of the people in the villages to uplift themselves and live like the people in the urban cities. Bit of Meraki was just an idea back in India and seemed like a long shot however when I moved to the US, I saw the opportunity of showcasing this talent at a global scale. India has so much to offer and is a diverse land of culture and tradition which changes every few miles and that’s what I wanted take i.e. provide a platform to these communities to show their skills while keeping the designs modern and chic. We ensure they get fair wages and are closely involved in their skill development as well.

What is your favorite and/or most unique product? Why?

I LOVE our poufs. I think it’s such a versatile, functional and a unique product and you can use it in so many ways to glam up your home. For eg you can use it as a foot stool, coffee table, side table, living room stool, meditation seating. It’s the one product that you cant get rid of no matter how many homes you switch. You’ll always find a use for it. The best part is that it’s super light based on the filing used. We recently switched to sustainable foam filling in our poufs which makes it more comfortable and lighter than before. It can come in literally any shape and size and you can go crazy with different artisanal designs.

What are you buying local for the holidays (for yourself/friends/family)?

Definitely things that make work from life easier ? Good quality headsets, office chairs, desks, glasses are the priority for everyone in our family this holiday! It’s great that we do home décor so we’re definitely thinking of giving some plush and comfy pillows for that after work rest.

City Shoppe is all about finding local goods and supporting local communities. What makes your community/city so special to you?

We started our company in Austin, Texas which was a great place to be as a new small business owner. The support in that community is incredible. There are so many avenues to network, learn and implement. I would definitely give that city a lot of credit for helping us achieve a lot of our milestones. We recently made a move to Seattle due to personal reasons and therefore had to move the base of the business as well. Seattle is the hub for ecommerce growth businesses. It’s so diverse, multicultural and conscious which is a big positive for us. Being close to the port will also really help in international trade and so we really look forward to what this city has to offer.

Why is supporting local businesses so important to you?

Being one we understand the struggle and the effort that one has to put in to become known/successful in the industry. Its definitely not easy specially now when things have changed drastically including consumer sentiments and we empathize with all who have gone through this. We are proudly woman owned and therefore want to support not just women artisans but women owned business specially women of color to create a community that is strong and giving.

Anything else you’d like to add in your spotlight?

We believe that every person on this planet should have the basic resources available to them, the most important being clean water. That’s something that shouldn’t come at a cost or should be a thing of privilege based on the country you’re in. Clean water directly impacts health and indirectly impacts education, standard of living etc hence it’s becoming more and more important to make sure every single person has access to it. Through Bit of Meraki purchases we donate a % of our sales to the cause of funding clean water wells in marginalized communities of Africa.
